What to wear for what: best fabrics by sport

Different workouts ask different things from a fabric. Cotton-spandex wins most categories, but not all of them. Here is the honest version, sport by sport, with the cases where another fabric is the right choice.

For the typical weekly mix of training, cotton-spandex is the right base for almost everything.

Yoga

Best, cotton-spandex blend. Yoga is gentle on fabric in the friction sense and demanding in the stretch sense. The fabric needs to move with deep poses without binding, and to feel soft against skin during long holds. Cotton with 8 to 10% spandex hits both. Soft hand-feel, generous stretch, recovery that holds through the session. Breathability matters less because the heat output is moderate, but cotton handles it better than polyester regardless. When to choose something else: hot yoga is the exception. In a heated studio, moisture management matters more than skin feel, and a tencel blend or merino piece will move sweat faster than cotton.

Pilates

Best, cotton-spandex blend. Pilates puts you on the floor and the reformer. The fabric needs grip for control and softness for skin contact during long mat work. Cotton has a slight texture that grips machine surfaces better than slick polyester. The skin-contact comfort over a 50-minute session is significant. This is one of the categories where the cotton advantage is most noticeable in practice. When to choose something else: if you sweat heavily through pilates, a bamboo lyocell or tencel blend can manage moisture better.

Strength training

Best, cotton-spandex, but construction matters. Strength training is where fabric construction matters as much as fibre choice. A poorly constructed cotton-spandex legging will thin and bag through repeated squats and deadlifts within months. A well-constructed one, long-staple cotton, core-spun yarn, interlock knit, 220 GSM and above, will handle years of heavy training. This is the category where cheap cotton-spandex fails most visibly. When to choose something else: for competitive powerlifting or anyone training in heavy compression gear, technical compression polyesters have an advantage.

Walking and hiking

Best, cotton-spandex for warm weather, merino blend for cold. Casual walking is forgiving on fabric. Cotton-spandex is comfortable for the duration of any walk in moderate weather, and it handles repeat wear without the odour problem polyester develops on long hiking trips. For cold-weather hiking, anything where temperature regulation matters and conditions might get wet, merino is hard to beat. It thermoregulates better than cotton, dries faster, and resists odour for multi-day trips where laundry is not an option.

Running and cardio

This is the trickiest category. For studio cardio (HIIT, dance fitness, intervals indoors): cotton-spandex works well. Drying speed matters less when the workout is under an hour and laundry is immediate. For short outdoor runs (under 30 minutes, mild weather): cotton-spandex is fine. The drying speed disadvantage is small at this duration. For long-distance running (over 60 minutes, especially in cold or wet weather): the case for polyester or merino gets stronger. Drying speed becomes a temperature regulation issue. Merino blends are the strongest natural alternative. They wick faster than cotton without the polyester downsides. Indoor cycling and spin

Best, cotton-spandex bottoms, merino top for long sessions. Spin is intense and sweaty. Cotton-spandex bottoms handle the seat contact and stretch demands well. For tops, cotton works for shorter sessions; merino is better for longer rides where odour control matters. Avoid 100% polyester. Spin bikes and tight polyester combine to produce some of the worst odour development across all activewear use cases, which we cover in why polyester smells faster.

Hot yoga and high-sweat studio

Best, tencel blend or merino. This is the category where cotton's limits show. In sustained heat with heavy sweat, cotton holds moisture longer than ideal. The fabric stays wet through the session. Tencel blends manage moisture more effectively while keeping a natural-fibre feel. Merino is the strongest option for both moisture and odour management. Pool and aqua training

Best, polyester or nylon. Pool fabric is one of the few cases where synthetics genuinely outperform natural fibres. Chlorine destroys cotton fibres over time. The chemistry is different from sweat, and natural fibres do not survive sustained chlorine exposure. If you are looking for a "natural alternative" for swimwear, the honest answer is there is not really a good one yet. Polyester and nylon are the right materials for the use case.

What to wear if you do most of the above

If your weekly training is yoga, pilates, strength, walking, and indoor cardio, which is the typical mix for most women training regularly, cotton-spandex is the right base for almost everything. Add a single merino piece for cold-weather walks or longer runs if those are part of your routine. Keep polyester swimwear for the pool. Done. What is the best fabric for yoga?
A cotton-spandex blend wins for almost all yoga. Cotton is breathable, gentle on skin during long stretches, and softens every wash. The 8 to 10% spandex gives the stretch and recovery deep poses need. The exception is hot yoga, where moisture-wicking matters more, and tencel or merino blends do better.
What is the best fabric for strength training?

For most fitness runners doing 30 to 60 minutes a few times a week, cotton-spandex is genuinely fine.
What is the best fabric for sensitive skin during workouts?
GOTS-certified organic cotton with a small spandex percentage. The cotton is the gentlest fibre against skin, and the GOTS audit covers the chemical processing, which is what causes most fabric-related skin reactions, more than the fibre type itself.
