Open a gym bag with a worn polyester top in it. Now open a gym bag with a worn cotton tee. They smell different. The polyester top smells worse, and it gets there faster, and the smell lingers in a way the cotton smell does not.
This is not in your head. It is chemistry, and it is one of the clearest practical reasons natural fibres are coming back into activewear.

Sweat itself does not smell
The fluid your skin secretes during a workout is almost entirely water, with traces of salt, urea, lactate, and a few organic compounds. None of it smells strongly on its own. Fresh sweat on freshly washed skin has almost no odour.
What smells is what happens after the sweat lands on something else. The bacteria on your skin, and the bacteria in your fabric, feed on the trace organics in sweat. They break those compounds down into smaller molecules. Isovaleric acid, which smells like cheese. 3-methyl-2-hexenoic acid, the classic "armpit" smell. Various sulfur compounds. They are produced by bacterial metabolism, not by sweat itself.
So odour control during workouts is bacterial control. Not sweat control.
Why polyester hosts more bacteria
Three properties of synthetic fibres make them friendlier to odour-producing bacteria.
Hydrophobic surface. Polyester repels water. Sweat does not absorb into the fibre. Instead, it sits in droplets between the fibres and on the surface, where bacteria have direct access to it as a food source. Research on textile microbiology has shown the bacterial life cycle in fabric is governed largely by fibre hydrophobicity. The more water-repellent the fibre, the more it favours odour-causing bacteria.
Closed environment. Synthetic activewear is usually tightly knit and tightly fit. Air circulation is poor, heat is trapped, and the microclimate against your skin stays warm and damp for hours after the workout. That is the textbook environment for bacterial growth. The skin-irritation side of that is in why your sportswear makes you itch.
Affinity for bacterial byproducts. Synthetic fibres bond more strongly with the molecules bacteria produce. The smell does not just sit on the fabric. It bonds to it. Once that bond is established, ordinary washing does not always break it.
A 2014 study by Callewaert et al. in Applied and Environmental Microbiology compared cotton and polyester t-shirts after a one-hour cycling workout. Polyester samples carried significantly higher concentrations of micrococci, the bacterial group most associated with workout odour. Cotton samples did not. This was not a marginal difference. It was the kind of result that confirms what most people already noticed in their own laundry.

What cotton does differently
Cotton absorbs sweat into the fibre rather than holding it on the surface. The sweat is then released slowly through evaporation. The standing moisture available to bacteria is much lower.
Cotton also does not bond with bacterial byproducts the way synthetics do. When you wash a worn cotton tee, the smell molecules come out. They have not chemically attached themselves to the fabric.
The result over time: a cotton workout shirt that has been worn fifty times and washed normally still smells like cotton. A polyester workout shirt that has been worn fifty times and washed normally smells like a polyester workout shirt that has been worn fifty times. The fabric remembers. Where merino fits
Merino wool deserves a separate mention because it is the strongest odour-resistant natural fibre we know of. The fibre has a complex outer scale structure that makes it harder for bacteria to colonise. It also retains residual lanolin, which has natural antimicrobial properties. And merino moves moisture extremely effectively, wicking sweat away from skin, releasing it through evaporation faster than cotton.
A merino base layer can usually be worn three or four times before it starts to smell. For multi-day travel, hiking, or training in environments where laundry is hard, merino is hard to beat. The trade-offs: merino is delicate, expensive, and requires careful washing. It is not always practical for everyday training. The full comparison is in best natural fabrics for activewear.
What to do if your activewear has gone past the point of return
For polyester garments where the smell has set in:
- Soak in white vinegar diluted with water (1:4) for thirty minutes before washing
- Wash on hot if the care label allows
- Add an oxygen-based cleaner. Chlorine bleach can degrade synthetic fibres
- Air dry completely, in sunlight if possible. UV breaks down some odour compounds
This will help. It will rarely fix it permanently. The biofilm rebuilds within a few wears. For cotton garments, ordinary washing is usually enough. Cotton does not develop the same biofilm, so the smell does not have the same anchor point.

We make activewear from 92% GOTS-certified organic cotton and 8% spandex. The cotton dominates the bacterial environment. Sweat absorbs in, releases out, and the smell comes out in the wash.
We did not add an antimicrobial coating, even though it is available and would let us write "anti-odour" on the hangtag. We did not add it because the cotton-spandex blend does not need it, and because antimicrobial coatings can irritate sensitive skin and break down with washing. This is the simpler version of how to make activewear that does not stink. Use a fibre that does not host bacteria. Stop covering up the symptom with a finish. Trust the material.
