Why two leggings with the same composition feel completely different

You buy two pairs of leggings. Both labels say 92% cotton, 8% spandex. One feels like quality activewear that holds up through years of training. The other pills after three washes, sags at the knees by month two, and starts going semi-transparent under squats by month four.

Same composition on the tag. Completely different garments.

This is the part of fabric quality that almost no brand explains, because it is technical and because the explanation does not flatter the brands at the cheaper end of the market. Here is what actually separates a premium legging from a budget one when the composition tag is identical.

Layer one, the cotton itself

Cotton is not one thing. The cotton plant produces fibres of different lengths depending on variety, growing conditions, and harvest method. Fibre length, measured as "staple length," is the single biggest predictor of how the finished cotton fabric will perform.

Short-staple cotton (under 26 mm) is the cheapest. It produces yarn that is rougher, more prone to pilling, and weaker under stretch. Most commodity cotton activewear uses short-staple. Long-staple cotton (28 to 32 mm) is what premium fabric brands work with. Smoother yarn, better strength, less pilling. Extra-long-staple cotton (over 34 mm, like Pima, Egyptian Giza, Sea Island) is the gold standard. Smoother still, more durable, more lustrous. Significantly more expensive and rarely used in activewear at any scale.

GOTS certification is independent of staple length. You can have GOTS short-staple cotton and non-GOTS extra-long. They tell you different things. GOTS tells you how it was grown and processed. Staple length tells you how it will perform. What GOTS audits is in what GOTS, OEKO-TEX and Fair Wear actually mean.

Layer two, the yarn

Once cotton is harvested and ginned, it is spun into yarn. The way it is spun determines a lot.

Yarn count. Higher count means finer yarn. A 40-count yarn is thinner and produces lighter, smoother fabric than a 20-count. For activewear that wants drape and softness without losing structure, premium fabrics often sit in the 30 to 50 count range. Twist. More twists per inch produces a stronger, more compact yarn. Less twist produces a softer, fluffier yarn. Activewear typically wants medium twist. Single yarn vs ply yarn. Single yarn is one strand. Ply yarn (2-ply, 3-ply) twists multiple strands together. Ply yarns are stronger and more uniform. Premium leggings often use 2-ply. Compact-spun vs ring-spun vs open-end. Compact-spun is the highest quality for cotton activewear. The fibres are bundled more tightly, producing smoother yarn with less hairiness, less pilling, and better stretch recovery.

Layer three, how the spandex is integrated

This is where most cheap "92/8" leggings fall apart, literally. Spandex can be integrated into the cotton fabric in two main ways. Blended spandex: the spandex fibres are exposed throughout the fabric structure. Some of them touch your skin directly. The fabric stretches well in the short term but the spandex degrades faster, through heat, through sweat, through washing, and the legging loses recovery within months. Core-spun yarn: the spandex is wrapped inside an outer cotton layer at the yarn stage. The legging never has spandex touching skin. The cotton layer protects the spandex from heat and chemicals during wear and washing. Recovery lasts for years instead of months. The hand-feel is smoother because skin only touches cotton.

The hangtag composition is identical for both: 92% cotton, 8% spandex. The performance is not. Premium cotton-spandex activewear is almost always core-spun. Cheaper activewear at the same composition is often blended. There is no rule on the label that distinguishes them.

Layer four, the knit structure

Yarn becomes fabric through knitting. The structure of that knit determines stretch, recovery, opacity, and squat-proofing. Single jersey is the basic stretch-knit structure. Light, soft, but lower opacity and less squat-proof. Interlock uses a double-knit structure, two layers of jersey effectively bonded into one. Heavier, more opaque, much more durable, and significantly more squat-proof. Most premium cotton-spandex activewear uses interlock or a variant. Rib knit has alternating raised and recessed columns. Excellent stretch with strong recovery. Often used for waistbands and cuffs. Ponte is a thick, interlock-based knit with a smooth surface. Heavier still, very compressive.

GSM (grams per square metre) is how knit weight is measured. Activewear leggings range from around 180 GSM (light summer pieces) up to 280 GSM and above (heavy, sculpting, fully opaque). A legging at 200 GSM and a legging at 250 GSM with the same composition will feel completely different. The heavier one is denser, more opaque, more squat-proof, and warmer. Brands rarely publish GSM. You can usually tell within a wear or two.

Layer five, the finishing

After knitting, fabric goes through finishing processes. These dramatically change feel. Brushed: the fabric is mechanically brushed to raise short fibres on the surface. Result, softer hand-feel, slightly warmer fabric, better drape. Mercerized: the fabric is treated with sodium hydroxide under tension. The cotton fibres swell and become rounder, which increases lustre, strength, and dye uptake. Enzyme-washed: enzymes break down surface fibres for a softer, lived-in feel. Often used to remove pilling-prone fibres before the garment ships, which is why a high-quality finished cotton garment does not pill on the first wear. Sanforized: the fabric is pre-shrunk under controlled conditions so it does not shrink unpredictably in the wash. Critical for any cotton activewear.

Sustainable finishing matters too. The chemicals used in finishing determine how much residue ends up in the finished garment. GOTS certification limits which finishing chemicals can be used and at what levels. Two leggings, 92/8 cotton-spandex, both labelled "soft and breathable." One is brushed, mercerized, enzyme-washed, GOTS-certified. The other is unfinished commodity cotton with cheap dye. They feel like different garments because they are different garments at every layer below the composition tag. The skin side of that is in why your sportswear makes you itch.

We are giving you the framework so you can read every other brand the same way. The next time you read "92% cotton, 8% spandex" on a hangtag, you know the questions to ask. Why do two leggings with the same fabric composition feel so different?
The composition tag tells you the percentages of fibre, but not the quality of the fibre, how it is spun into yarn, how the yarn is knit into fabric, or how the fabric is finished. Two leggings labelled '92% cotton, 8% spandex' can use cotton from completely different sources, yarn of different counts and twists, knit structures with different stretch and recovery, and finishing processes that create totally different hand-feel. The tag is the start, not the answer.
What is GSM and why does it matter for leggings?
GSM stands for grams per square metre, the weight of the fabric. For activewear leggings, GSM ranges from around 180 (light, breathable, lower opacity) up to 280 and above (heavy, opaque, sculpted). Higher GSM generally means more durable, more squat-proof, and more compressive. Lower GSM is lighter and cooler. Most premium activewear sits between 220 and 260 GSM.
What does core-spun spandex mean?
Core-spun yarn has the spandex thread wrapped inside an outer layer of cotton or other fibre. The skin only ever touches the cotton, never the spandex directly. The result is a softer hand-feel, better stretch recovery, and longer durability than fabrics where spandex is openly blended in. Most premium cotton-spandex activewear uses core-spun construction. Many cheaper brands do not.
What makes a legging squat-proof?
Three things, in combination. Sufficient GSM (usually 220 and above for cotton-spandex). High-density knit construction that does not separate under stretch. And an opaque dye-and-finish process. A legging can pass the squat test on day one and fail it after a year if the construction was not built for repeat stretching.
